“Seventy-five percent of people are average or below,” I explained.
“What? That doesn’t make sense.”
“Well, if we consider the middle fifty percent to be average, then we take that fifty and add the twenty-five below and…”
“You get seventy-five,” she concluded.
“Yes.”
“I need to process this.”
When I first started working at the high school level, I learned something very quickly. It wasn’t okay to be average. And, I had to change my words to describe average – typical, developmentally appropriate, and standard were my favorites. Average was bad.
I believe this perception needs to change.
